DODGEBALL LEAGUE RULES-Fall 2008
PLAY
A.
Teams begin the
game with 6 players. Teams may start
the game with less than 6, but no more than 6.
Two subs may stand against the wall until a player from their team
catches a ball to allow them into play.
Only 8 total are allowed in the Arena during a game (because of
liability issues, we ask that only team members be in the Arena during games –
this means no fans, children, coaches, etc.)
B.
A game consists of
the best of 7 game series (10 min time limit per game).
C.
The number of balls
for a 12-player game is six balls.
D.
Players take
position on their side with a body part touching the end wall. After a signal by the official, teams
approach the centerlines to retrieve the balls.
E.
Balls must be taken
back across the midlines before they can be thrown at an opposing player. If the ball is not taken behind the midline
before it is thrown, the throw will not count.
F.
Players then
attempt to eliminate members of the opposing team by hitting them with the ball. If a player is hit with any ball that has
not yet touched the floor, wall, or ceiling, that player is “out”.
G.
Play continues
until one team is eliminated or 10-minute time limit ends, the team with most
players left is winner (if there are the same amount of players on each team at
10 minutes, sudden death rule applies).
H.
The balls are then
reset on the centerline and play resumes when the whistle is blown.
I.
The first team to
win a majority of games wins the contest.
All 7 games are played out…they can determine your team’s playoff
eligibility!
RULES OF PLAY
A.
Uniforms are
considered part of a player’s body.
B.
Any ball that
touches the ground, ceiling or wall is a dead ball.
C.
If a defender
catches a “live” thrown ball the thrower is out and one player then returns to
the defenders side in order of first out, first in.
D.
If a defender
attempts to catch a live ball, but drops it, the defender is out.
E.
The defender may
block a live ball with another ball.
That ball is still a live ball however, until it hits the floor, wall or
ceiling – this means if the blocked ball hits that player or another player,
that person is OUT.
F.
If a blocking ball
is dropped as a result of contact from a live ball, then the player who drops
the ball is out.
G.
A player may block
a live ball, then throw the blocking ball down and catch a live ball.
H.
A player shall not
leave the playing field to avoid being hit or in an attempt to catch a ball.
I.
A ball that rolls
to a player that is out may be retrieved by that player to their team.
J.
It is illegal for
the leading team to control all the balls for more than 10 seconds. (A
violation will result in the referee stopping play and the balls will be
divided evenly).
K.
“Stalling” the game
is not allowed – if the referee depicts this, a verbal warning is issued for
the team to throw the balls. If balls
are not thrown, all balls will be divided evenly between teams.
L.
Because of the size
and weight of the new dodgeballs, headshots will not count. If the referee suspects a player
intentionally throwing at a person’s head, they will be given a warning, and
then ejected if witnessed again. If a
player intentionally uses their head to accept a thrown ball, that player will
also receive a warning and then ejected if witnessed again. We are trying to avoid injuries!
M.
You may not cross the midline at all for any reason
or you will be called out. No exceptions other than the initial race
for the balls at the start of the match.
This includes reaching over to retrieve a ball in addition to stepping
over.
O.
Unsportsmanlike
conduct will result in immediate ejection from the game. Referees will be enforcing a no-tolerance
rule in order to keep games running efficiently and smooth.
P.
Subs must stand
against the goal wall while they are out.
If you have 6 players you can join the league. No more than 15 people per roster.
An individual may only play on ONE team. If it is suspected that you are not on a team’s roster or that
you play for another team, the team will receive a disqualification.
Teams are responsible for team uniforms (same color)
Sessions will consist of 6 weeks of play (1 or 2 nights a week) for a
team cost of $150.
We suggest you have a roster of at least 8 players to ensure you have
enough to play on game night.
Games will have an official/scorekeeper present and the YMCA will
provide dodgeballs.
Teams are REQUIRED to display good sportsmanship in the act of shaking
hands after the 7-game session.
There will be a single elimination championship tournament at the end
of the regular season and will be seeded according to regular season
record. Your regular season record may
determine team entry and qualification.
Award given to the winning team of the tournament.
