The summer break is fast approaching. While some kids and pre- teens may prefer to spend their summer vacation playing video games or watching television, the Summer programs remind parents of the value of enrolling their child in summer programs at the YMCA.

“Spending the summer in YMCA School Age summer “camp” programs are not only a valuable and safe experience for youth, it’s also important to their personal development,” says Paula Butler, Schoolage & Camp Director, “Camp helps youth develop social and decision-making skills, and learn from new experiences.”

Camping experts at the YMCA say that summer camp can make a meaningful impact on youth in several ways:

  • Youth experience “unstructured” playtime that they normally don’t have at home or school, thus learning how to become independent, make smart choices, solve problems and work with others.
  • The experience of trying and learning new things, including adventurous outdoor activities, gives youth confidence and helps them develop healthy life-long habits.
  • As fewer youth are spending time outdoors, camp gets youth outdoors, leading them to develop an awareness and appreciation for nature.
  • At camp youth are loved and given guidance, and feel a part of a community, allowing them to feel comfortable being themselves without judgment.
  • Youth learn from other campers and counselors, and make new friends to share it all with.

The YMCA Summer programs provide exciting and educational summer camp options that appeal to both parents and kids including:
  • Summer Fun – 9 individual weekly sessions beginning June 14th – August 20th (excluding the week of July 26th). Children may enroll for one week or up to all ten! Summer Fun campers will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of camp activities: arts-n-crafts, outdoor recreation, a little academic enrichment, field trips and a lot of outdoor pool swimming! Summer Fun campers are also entitled to participate free of charge in any or all of the following Olin Perkins sports clinics: Soccer. All Sports, Fun-da-mental Basketball, and Floor Hockey. Lunch & snacks are provided for no additional cost through the City Free Lunch program.
  • Camp C.O.D.E. –One week of outdoor daycamp excitement at Camp Potomac in Oldtown, MD. July 26th -30. Transportation from several locations in the area will be included as well as hot lunches. Campers will experience a variety of activities: boating, bb guns, archery, nature skills & education, hiking, swimming and more!
